Christ, how did I not hear about this guy until now? I guess nobody remembers number 2. He was the second most decorated soldier behind Audie Murphy but he had the most decorations for valor. Nominated several times for the MOH but he wasn't completely squeaky clean. But still...3 DSC's and 3 Silver Stars. Awesome.

Re: Llewellyn Chilson...WW2 badass
The four American soldiers managed to escape on February 17, taking 4 enemy prisoners with them. This then led to the capture of 40 enemy soldiers by Chilson.
military awards include twelve individual decorations for combat he received from the U.S. Army for World War II: three Distinguished Service Crosses, three Silver Stars, one Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars (one for heroism), and three Purple Hearts.[15] Seven of the twelve individual decorations are combat decorations for valor and appears to be the most number of individual combat decorations for valor awarded to an infantryman by the U.S. Army for World War II.
God damn. While hospitalized, he met a U.S. Army nurse named Mary Armstrong, whom he married later that year.

That list of awards would fill a totem pole. Great soldier.
