This meme came up in conversation on a thread on my Facebook page. I was surprised that I'd never heard of it, before. So I googled it. Google's autocomplete kicked in after I typed "chr" ... WOW.

Anyway, I guess I'm going to Hell now, for Googling it. So since it can't get any worse, I figured I'd mentally circle why this meme doesn't actually work, why it's, well for lack of a better word- retarded.

A person with Down's Syndrome is, as I understand it, a person who has *one chromosome too many.

So, wouldn't he be trying to get rid of an extra chromosome? I mean, if an extra chromosome gave him Down's Syndrome, wouldn't it make more sense if he was trying to get rid of the extra chromosome?

This meme asks more questions than it answers. To-whit:

1. Why on Earth would he be trying to acquire another one?

2. He already has three, it's not like he's addicted to crack and ran out, so why resort to -of all things- robbery at gunpoint to acquire this aforementioned useless extra chromosome?

3. Why does the lad have access to firearms?

4. Am I over-thinking this?

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

And damn you Shaf, for piquing my curiosity and making me google that ridiculous thing! I burned ten minutes contemplating it.

I'd drill, or roll with a Jiu Jitsu training partner with Downs, if one such BJJ player ever came to the academy. But I wouldn't actually fight him in the cage or whatever. Something about that just wouldn't be right. I don't care if I sound "ableist" or whatever, it's not cool to actually fight somebody with Downs.

Down Syndrome is also known as Trisomy 21. It occurs because of non-disjunction or translocation errors in meiosis. You are correct, the affected person will have three copies of the 21st chromosome instead of a pair.

There are several disorders like Cri du chat (chromosome 5p deletion) that cause severe impairment or retardation and involve chromosome deletions.
