You're not kidding. My mom and my aunt go to either go to Mass or watch it on TV every day. You should hear the righteous outrage at their money being used to settle lawsuits. It's not that they don't believe the victims should be compensated. It's that they believe the Church engaged in a decade long criminal conspiracy that reached all the way to Rome to cover things up. It changed my mom's whole personality,made her much more jaded.
It should have changed her. It killed me to advocate for it, but the Church itself and any implicated clergy should have been prosecuted under RICO and any applicable criminal laws. The Church also should have been shut down and all property impounded until a resolution and assurance the criminal acts would not continue.

And by and large, the US Catholic Church has made significant progress in their handling of pedophilia accusations since the 70's-- there are still things that need to be done, but there has been progress. You might have a little more credibility if you hadn't cried wolf on pizzagate.
