Criminal Court

Post by Grandpa's Spells »

If you ever feel like a pick-me-up, or that you have problems, stop by a criminal court. People fucking up their lives left and right.

We had a bookkeeper steal some money from the company with a fairly sophisticated scheme, and the criminal trial has been dragging on for years, and that was after I personally had to get involved to make an arrest happen. I don't know what people are doing to actually end up in prison, but they gotta be fucking up hard and often.

I don't know how people work there. It's gotta be depressing as shit to see that day in, day out.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Most of the people who end up in prison are minorities who get caught with minuscule amounts of drugs. Keeps the for profit prison beds full, and the cheap labor flowing.
I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog.

I'd have went with " Most people who end up in prison are criminals"
"I am the author of my own misfortune, I don't need a ghost writer" - Ian Dury

Just ad on "without the money to buy themselves some 'justice' ", and you're right.

While true, I've been pulled over twice in the last month, both times without proper insurance, and once without ID, and in both cases I was immediately let go with a warning. I've certainly had times in the past where if a cop wanted to fake probably cause for a search, I'd have a record. Being white is a huge leg up.

The bookkeeper in this case is a "nice" white lady from an affluent suburb who stole about $100k, and I'm told it's extremely likely she will never see the inside of a prison. That would not be the case if she were black and from the south side getting caught for a tiny fraction of that in credit card fraud. This is a prosecutor telling me this, trying to manage expectations on the trial, and those folks generally aren't social justice warriors.

Some people in prison are political prisoners - the War on some Drugs. About half? People get more jail time for selling weed than they do for rape or manslaughter. Some people catch a record for possession and aren't able to get schooling since many States won't let you get student aid if you have a "drug offense". A few get into the business and are put away.

Some hypocrites who wail about "Demon weed" do so over Cocktails. A lot of people die from drinking and driving or liver failure. People need to mind their own damn business. If they can't mind their own business then some proportion is appreciated. Cry into your Martini about marijuana but leave the smokers alone.

Being calm, polite and professional is a huge leg up. I've never had any serious trouble because I don't react badly to normal business. I've lost count of the number of times I've had police stop me to ask me about my business. They call me "bud" or shine bright lights in my eyes, which trashes my night vision. I have to stand still with my hands out. I show them ID as a courtesy. I like to take late night walks, minding my own business. It's not normal, police respond to "abnormal", I know this, expect this and don't sweat it. Sometimes it rains or snows, other times the Police come around.

I bet if I gave those same Police the ass, talked about my rights and got hostile that I might catch some hell. Instead they thank me for my "understanding" and mosey on. They're out there, I'm out there. What of it?

I think some folks behave like they're going to be shot on the street so they act scared. Scared people make police suspicious. Some African Americans and Latinos are very sensitive to "racism". They get offended really easily, seeing "racism" behind stupid behaviors that some folks use on everyone. Hostility makes police suspicious too.

I think some Police brutality is the result of a self fulfilling prophecy. These kids need training in how to respond to normal questioning, how to let smart ass remarks go past them. Being brittle about "disrespect" is fine if you're competing for business, with Police it's counterproductive.

Police are the leading edge of the Criminal Justice System. Most of them want to catch "bad guys", not waste time on Civilians. Time spent on little stuff means that some real criminal is up to no good. Most Police have a deep faith in the Law, it's their source of power and prestige. You disrespect their power and they're going to have issues. Police are often very people smart too. They can read people.

You come at them like they're "Pigs" and "the Establishment" it's going to show. Sometimes they're going to react.

How is seeing the misfortune of others a "pick me up"? Might be a nice source of perspective, "They have it worse than me, I have no right to complain".

Too many people want to mind everyone else's business because their own lives are so fucked up and empty. I wonder what new idiotic law or regulation such misfits are going to impose on the rest of us and which may catch me some day.
