Jimmy Carter started an informal war on guns in the late 1970s. Abuse of GCA requirements. A lot of gun owners were indicted for paper work irregularities. Some were enslaved as informants. By 1980 gun owners were talking about abolishing the ATF. Some thoughtful person amongst them asked, "Would you like the FBI to enforce gun laws instead of the ATF?"

We're going to have immigration controls. They're not going to go away because ICE goes away.

Who wants the FBI to enforce immigration laws? How about a new agency who will probably hire former ICE members?
