If true, widespread mask usage is almost free, allows an open economy, and could buy a ton of time. Unfortunately, to get to 80% it would require Republican leadership, which doesn't appear forthcoming.

Our problem is that our main economic engine is tourism and we are now faced with the choice of opening up to you plague rats or completely collapsing our economy. And, even if we open up completely with no undue quarantine burdens on visitors, not many people will want to go on vacation in a devastated economic climate. It's bad.nafod wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 5:44 pm Fats, you guys in Hawaii are winning the battle.

With the White House itself now a possible COVID hotspot, they're ordering mask usage in the West Wing:
It appears quite possible to tamp this down if we institute nationwide mask usage, but you have to get everybody on board. The huge advantage for Trump is that the people who hate masks right now generally vote Republican and will follow his lead. Six months until an election and he could literally make American great again.

The problem is worst in the tri-state area, and in the worst hit areas, Republicans have almost no political power.

Nice try making this a partisan issue.

Re: Wu Flu
https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/loca ... c/2299411/At least five contract security officers have tested positive for the coronavirus at the New York Avenue homeless shelter in Northeast Washington, D.C. One of those officers has died, while another described “severe” symptoms before recovering. The illnesses of contract and government employees of D.C. homeless shelters are not publicly announced in daily COVID-19 updates by Mayor Muriel Bowser, but they were confirmed through interviews and public records requests by the News4 I-Team.
The virus has spread widely through the New York Avenue shelter, one of the largest homeless facilities in the region. In addition to the five contract security officers, at least two other contract staff have tested positive, the I-Team learned. The DC Department of Human Services said one of the other contract workers who tested positive is a janitor. The agency told the I-Team approximately 85 residents tested positive as well.
I'm guessing this suggests a larger problem in DC, which has a large homeless population. There are still plenty of homeless on the streets, Probably similar in other areas with large homeless populations as well.

The 10 top areas recorded surges of 72.4 percent or greater over a seven-day period compared to the previous week, according to a set of tables produced for the task force by its data and analytics unit. They include Nashville, Tennessee; Des Moines, Iowa; Amarillo, Texas; and — atop the list, with a 650 percent increase — Central City, Kentucky.
...On a separate list of "locations to watch," which didn't meet the precise criteria for the first set: Charlotte, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska; Minneapolis; Montgomery, Alabama; Columbus, Ohio; and Phoenix. The rates of new cases in Charlotte and Kansas City represented increases of more than 200 percent over the previous week

OK, we aren't talking about quite the same thing. If you want to get to 80% mask usage, which appears to be the minimum number for max effect, you have to get a pretty good number of our MAGAmigos to get on the bus. The upside is, Trump/Hannity/McConnell/etc. can actually persuade those people to do it. Any Democratic President would struggle to get Fox viewers on board.

You have no proof of any of that. Most, if not all, of the Dem haters I know regularly wear masks in public and practice social distancing. And the worst hit groups, like African Americans, tend not to be Fox viewers.Grandpa's Spells wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2020 4:09 amOK, we aren't talking about quite the same thing. That's not how stats work-- a podunk town that went from 1 to 3 cases would make that first list. On your second list, which includes larger cities-- how many of them have Republican majorities?nafod wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2020 3:41 amIt's the growth rate that matters. NYC and NJ both have declining daily rates of new infections, yet the country as a whole is holding steady or slightly decreasing. That's because it's growing elsewhere. Jfc the relentless dishonesty from you.
Absent NYC and its fuckups there was no actual health emergency. It was a flu for the rest of the country.
NYC seeded NNJ. NYC seeded eastern PA. NYC seeded CT. NYC seeded MA.
In fact, most cases outside of WA and CA (and many in those) were seeded by NYC.
NYC sent positives back to their nursing homes. Knowingly killing the olds we were all allegedly destroying the economy to protect.
We've all been fucked by NYC.
And now you are Schadenfreuding out about this because the orange man is bad and violates norms?
For the love of God stop being so dishonest.
