I picked up a tattered copy of The Sword of Shannara at the beach house and have made it about half way through.

Fat have you read Cook's Black Company series?
Re: Right now I'm reading
I read the first one when I was a kid way back in the 80s. Would be willing to give it a go. This Terry Brooks novel is the first fantasy I've read in ages and just happened because it was at hand. It was popular when I was younger and read more in this vein, but I had never been attracted to it. Mostly I read nonfiction or at most historical fiction now days.

Same with Cook and reading preferences. But I re-read last year and it is really really good.
Erikson's Malazan is derivative of Cook but the first few books in the series are excellent as well.
Also, Joe Abercrombie.

Ordered this after tapping out on The Eye Of the World.nafod wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 3:05 pm Just finished The Fifth Season By NK Jemisin, which was excellent. Fantasy sci-fI with unusual premise story. Rolling into the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, and its off and running on page one. There’s a third book too. I’m already wistful about being done with them when I’m done with them.

I'll put in a recommendation here for Njal's Saga. It's incredibly cool and good. Iceland just before the mass conversion to Christianity. Lots of murder and revenge and fighting and heroes and legal maneuvering. Well a ton of legal maneuvering. A little magic. Great great stuff.

I went to Robert Jordans alma mater and we are both autistic engineers, but I can't bring myself to enjoy his work.
I am reading Junger's Storm of Steel, which is so far on par with Lucy's Devil in the Drum (WW1 accounts).

Interesting, my granddad was in Burma and never spoke about it. I actually don't know anything about that campaign.Bennyonesix1 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:38 pm I'll absolutely second Junger.

Reading "The Man from the Train," based on someone's recommendation here on IG. This is about an early 1900's serial killer. What's so fascinating is not the serial killer story, which is rather dreary, but the picture painted of the early 20th century United States. We have come so far, in standard of living/prosperity AND in crime investigation.
I wish those who today feel so hopeless & oppressed could appreciate what life was not so long ago.

Is this new Abercrombie as good as the old?

He is must be the best in Russian fantasy.

Abercrombie is good as always.

Third of the way through, you're right. One of the greats.
Being set in the Southwest, your thread on tripping around those parts made me think of it.

FC, I'm worried about you. The lockdown-induced IR porn binge has taken you in a bad direction.
