Re: Beer!!!
i've been disappointed by all the flying dog i've tried. i'm not an expert, but if i'm not mistaken my problem is with the overwhelming malt, or the dearth of hops, or maybe both. it's been a while, but i made multiple efforts and couldn't enjoy it. unusual for me, because i will drink virtually anything that isn't blue moon or pyramid hefeweizen.
i'll echo the sentiments earlier in the thread about dogfish head 90 minute IPA, which is one of the best beers i've ever had; and 1554, which is the best beer new belgium makes and is very good.
a trip to munich for oktoberfest back in '09 kind of ruined a lot of beer for me. that's not to say i've become a big german beer snob*, just that i've come to appreciate a little restraint on the brewer's part in favor of easy-drinking. i love a ruination IPA once in a while, but when i pick up a six- or twelve-pack, it's usually harp, newcastle, sam adams, or stella.
*but german beer is better. i drank at least 9 liters of lowenbrau between 1pm and 2am and my hangover at 9am was one of the most pleasant i've ever had.

For east coast beer Raging Bitch is above average-- better than any of the other Flying Dog beers I've tried. It would never get attention on the west coast.neubauten wrote:i've been disappointed by all the flying dog i've tried. i'm not an expert, but if i'm not mistaken my problem is with the overwhelming malt, or the dearth of hops, or maybe both. it's been a while, but i made multiple efforts and couldn't enjoy it. unusual for me, because i will drink virtually anything that isn't blue moon or pyramid hefeweizen.

Just had Foothills Hopium-- one of the best hoppy NC beers I've tried.

Southern Tier has some beers that would stand tall against most of the stuff I drank when in Washington. Although the single best beers I've ever had have come from the PNW.
And Allagash can go toe to toe with the best of the PNW as well.

That is funny. We are probably outliers, but it's more like 3K and worth every penny. And we only have Bachelor's degrees.Grim wrote:Seven hundred bucks a year? What kind of pussies did they poll?Turdacious wrote:

Even with Two Buck Chuck and PBR's we'd do way more than $700 bucks worth of damage to our livers annually. That chart must be in 1960's dollars.

When I drank I would have spent $700 a week if I weren't on scholarship at a few bars.

Re: Beer!!!
I had a buddy who had a credit card our senior year specifically for booze. I'm positive he put far more than $700 on that thing in the school year alone, let alonge Jan 1-Dec 31.

HUGE fan of these:

Everyday beer:

And I agree that Coastal Wheat by Sam Adams is absolutely horrible. I like Fat Tire but everything else by that company sucks.

Concur - the SA Black Lager is excellent. Will drink my last this evening.protobuilder wrote:HUGE fan of these:

Their (Sam Adams) Latitude 48 IPA is quite good as well imo. Appreciate the warning on Coastal Wheat. Being in Boston has "forced" a trial of the many types as they are readily available in the base package store.

They make a separate beer from each of the hop varieties that are in the regular version, and put some of each in the case .

Re: Beer!!!
I had the Porter last year at the holidays. It was ok, but nothing to write home about. I'd try the back & tan myself and the traditional lager if you've never had it.

+1 on the traditional. The light is nice if you're into light beer. The Crawdaddy wrote:I had the Porter last year at the holidays. It was ok, but nothing to write home about. I'd try the back & tan myself and the traditional lager if you've never had it.

Re: Beer!!!
If I had to recommend a Yuengling beer,I'd say try the Chesterfield Ale or the Porter.
They are(and maybe the B&T and Traditional),IMHO, for the drinker just beginning to explore beers outside the "premium" market.
