Don Winslow
This guy writes some great crime fiction. I just finished Power of the Dog about US war on drugs and Mexican cartels, spans the years 1975 - 2004 . The story follows a DEA agent and an up and coming druglord . Lots of violence suspense.
I have read a few of his other books all worth the time.

Re: Don Winslow
I liked the Kings of Cool, and to a lesser degree Savages. The movie of Savages was terrible, aside from Benicio Del Toro being totally over the top.

Read "Savages." Non-stop page turner, with a stylistic flourish, lotsa homegrown, double penetrations, surfing, death, destruction. I don't recall any clawhammers....
