Frank Zane Leg Blaster

Post by GeorgeK »

Frank Zane Leg Blaster. Is this a worthwhile piece of equipment?
I have no rack, i do have plates and a barbell, and KBs
Can this effectively replace squats for a moderately active person who wants to get into better shape.?
I saw one for sale.
Thanks for the advice.

How about a Zane Grey leg blaster?

I had one for a while, straight from the source. I was nursing some injuries at the time and was trying to find a way to get some leg work in.

Be aware that this thing takes up a LOT of floor space and elbow room, even with the unloaded harness parked on the stand. Of course, that's probably true for any barbell/rack set up you take home from the store. You're much better off if you can put it outside on the back deck, etc., rather than inside a typical den or living room.

The "harness squat" is reasonably demanding, and being able to hold on the stand means that you can pull yourself past any sticking points in the squat, so it is probably safer than heavy squats by yourself without a power rack/stands etc. It also lets you go almost straight down, ass-to-calves, while your shins stay vertical, so there is less pressure on the back and knees.

OTOH, the weighted harness itself does make it harder to breathe - but maybe not as much as a similarly weighted barbell across your back would. It left me with some pretty good bruises now and then when the weight got over 130 lbs or so.

Decent device, not the miracle worker Zane claims it to be. If you have money to burn and room to spare, you could do worse. If I had to do it over, I'd have gone with a Trap Bar.
