Glen Cook
Kicks ass. Quietly redefined the fantasy genre with his "Dread Empire" and, more specifically, his "Black Company" books.
Re: Glen Cook
Both his Garrett PI and his Black Company series peaked early, then seemed to trail on forever with occasional flashes of the original brillance coming to the surface.
*edit*
But I keep re-reading both series, it is true.

Re: Glen Cook
His "Tyranny of the Night" stuff has been decent so far
"The Black Company" was a highwater mark. "The Silver Spike" came very near it.
Overall, though, he beats the shit out of most contemporary fantasy.
Reading Steven Erikson's "The Malazan Book of the Fallen" series, which is grotesque in scope, has been pretty fun.
