Martin Cruz Smith (Gorky Park)

Post by Shafpocalypse Now »

So, I'm wandering through my favorite library, looking at the new releases, and a book called "Stalin's Ghost" catches my eye. I check it out and find out that this same author wrote "Gorky Park" and that this was the latest in that series about Arkady Renko.

Now, I remember the movie "Gorky Park" vaguely, but not the book, but, since I have a shitload of books, I decide to save it for another month.

Later on, the same day, I take my daughter to another, smaller, closer library, and while she's doing puzzles and playing preschool computer games, I wander the stacks and pick up Smith's "Polar Star", which was the second book in the Ranko series and started reading it.

I ended up checking it out and reading about 200 pages today, good stuff.

I'm always pleased when I find a book I enjoy, especially when it's a series.

IIRC, he also wrote "Nightwing," which is a novel set in the Southwest, about rabid vampire bats. It's got a backdrop of Pueblo shamanism, water rights battles, and oil shale deals, and has almost NOTHING in common with that abortion of a horror film made from it. Not a bad read either.

I like it when if feels like a book or author is calling you.

I read the three Arkady Renko books, all pretty good IMO. Lee Marvin did a good job playing the heavy in the Gorky Park movie.

These are some of the best books I've read in 2008. I'm very pleased I decided to pick them up. Haven't read Gorky Park yet.
