There was something in the paper about this last month saying "cult British show on dvd for the first time" etc... That was all it took for me to queue it up. It's similar to The Sandbaggers in that they only made a few episodes and it has a bit of a cult following.
Poldark is a BBC show from 1975 set in Cornwall in the late 1780s. The title character has just returned from the American War after escaping from a French POW camp. He was declared dead and all of his assets were given away. He shows up out of the blue and the fun begins.
It's a typical BBC production...great writing, very good acting, and a really low budget. In addition to the usual soap opera crap the show has a lot to say about class warfare. (Something almost completely absent from American TV.) The wife and I are really enjoying it and I think it's worth a rental if you are into British TV fare.
PS It even features Joe the lomtick toast muncher from A Clockwork Orange, what the fuck more do you want?
