No, this isn't a Jeff Foxworthy comedy book. It's about the origins of rednecks written by an angry white male who also happens to be a damn good writer.

Goad argues that a large percentage of whites who came to America were sent here as indentured servants. America was Britain's penal colony and they only started sending the criminals to Australia after the revolution. The first few chapters have an in depth and annotated history of the U.S. that is a wonderful counterpoint to Zinn's "Peoples Histroy".

The best chapters in my mind are "Workin' Hard" and Playin' Hard". These are about redneck working history and hillbilly relaxation methods respectively.

Hell it's worth buying just for the title of Chapert 10..."Several Compelling Arguments for the Enslavement of All White Liberals".

There are a ton of good quotes to choose from, buy here's a few...

"When I see a black guy wearing a dashiki, I wonder how he'd feel if he saw me walking down the street in a druid costume."

"The only full-time workers on earth who put in more hours than Americans are the Korean and Japanese, and they're maniacs anyway."

"If most of white America becomes white trash, redneck rage might suddenly not seem so uncool to them. When all these peacenikky, tie-died, dread-locked, baggy-panted, snot-bearded, eyebrow-pierced community-college graduates realize they'll never do much better than $5.50-$7.50 an hour part-time without benefits, their equation of working-class anger with bigoted backwardness will evaporate."
