Yoga For Fighters - Phil Migliarese

Post by DrDonkeyLove »

Disclaimer: I am not a fighter

I picked this up from AWMA where service was prompt w/regular emails telling me exactly where my product was in the processing and shipping cycle. Cost was $49.95 with free shipping

Considering the title, I thought that it might have more of a strength component compared to a Swenson or Kest. That was a wrong assumption.

It's mostly plain old yoga done well enough to suit me. Phil's explanations are as clear as anyone's. The production values are not super high end but plenty good enough. The yoga instruction is broken up into four sections: Sun Salutations, Standing, Seated, and Full Practice. Total time to do the entire program is 35-40 minutes plus rest at the end.

There is a section at the end where he shows 10 vignettes of how the yoga poses translate to BJJ/MMA mat practice. The total time for this is about 40 minutes. He really seems like he knows what he's talking about here.

As a guy just doing yoga to stay flexible and vital, it's still a good purchase. The positions can be quite challenging and some of them were either new to me or new variations of what I've seen previously. If you're happy w/your Swenson, YRG, Kest, Yoga Doc, or whatever, you don't need this. If you get a bit bored and want the same thing but "different", this is worth a look. If you're a BJJ/MMA practitioner, it's probably a useful tool in the toolbox if for no other reason than his direct correlation of yoga poses to BJJ/MMA moves.

It definitely stays in my yoga rotation.

I'd wonder why Rickson never did a fitness or movement DVD. The "Choke" footage is so good.

I have been interested in this and if I have any extra cabbage I'll pick it up.

Thanks for the review, DDL!

This wasn't bad, and if you are interested in the analysis of how yoga aids BJJ, it might be worth it. Like the OP, I was expecting to see something maybe a bit different, but this is straight up yoga.
