Annie Duke is Matt Furey of poker. Eh? Go on... She tends to just-so-happen to be involved in high profile business failures that involve money going missing. https://www.cardplayer.com/poker-news/22503-why-does-mainstream-media-keep-talking-to-former-poker-pro-annie-duke https://www.playusa.com/an...

The problem with Altra is that once you get used to wearing them, you'll hate all other shoes.
Needless to say, I like them. I have had five or six different pair.
I have a pair of Topo Runventure that have minimal rise and a wide toe box, too.

Re: Jumping off the 10 meter tower
Reminded me a little of airborne operations, except for all the thinking about it. Because of my big gun, I got to "stand in the door" and be the first one out for many of my jumps...just a gas. But had I ever hesitated, the jump master would have put his foot in my ass, because he had a ...

They can't get ID's because it's too hard, yet can sign up and receive a variety of state and federal benefits. how does this work? Exactly. For the foreigners here...the idea is of a national identity card won't be entertained in the U.S. There's an anecdote that Reagan shot it down in a meeting b...

All or Nothing - A Season with the Arizona Cardinals on Amazon
I'm not a pro football fan, but I binged watched all eight episodes this weekend. (Since I'm not a fan, I didn't know the outcome of any of the games except the last. I knew they didn't go the the Super Bowl, but that's it.) It was a little heavy on the players giving motivational speeches to each o...

I'm fluent in Spanish (BA a long time ago, lived in LatAm for six years) and upper intermediate in French (thanks to excellent training from Uncle Sam.) I've used and can recommend yabla.com and Mango. I've used but don't recommend Rossetta Stone. I'm kind of on the fence about duolingo. You can onl...

Del Toro is really good and Blunt is hot as fuck but this felt like half a movie. They didn't explore anything in any real depth. Amazing casting, amazing shots... ...and a great build up to...nothing. I was waiting for it to just explode, but it just never came. This. I really liked it, but the en...

JK Simmons nailed it as the physically and mentally abusive band leader, but the kid playing the lead was excellent as well.

I have a GoPro. It's for action sports. Even with the add-on screen, it's not the first choice for recording simple things off of a tripod.

I feel bad for the Crossfit Kids founders in the same way that I feel bad for the victims of a 419 scam. And by feel bad, what I really mean is that I want to slap them and say "Why didn't you Google this before investing your life savings? If you had, you'd see than nothing good comes out of w...

Dean Potter killed in BASE-jumping accident
In what must be the least shocking news story ever... On Saturday evening, May 16, BASE jumpers Dean Potter and Graham Hunt died after attempting a wingsuit flight from Taft Point, a 7,500-foot promontory that overlooks Yosemite Valley and El Capitan. http://www.outsideonline.com/1981591/dean-potter...

I did the same hike in a day but reversed (I know there's some logic to coming back up Bright Angel - and maybe even some rule - can't remember now though.) I did it around July 4th. It was a scorcher. I wanted to do a rim to tim to rim, but decided not to due to questions about water availability o...

Re: My adventures with Taissiya D Wiggins from Khazakstan
I deal with 419/romance scams at work. Taissiya is soon to be involved in a serious car wreck. Don't worry, the doctor treating her will tell you that she'll make a complete recovery but only if they fly in a special doctor from India to perform the surgery. Unfortunately, the hospital will need the...

Serial podcast (big thumbs up) (No spoilers)
If you haven't listened to this, you should. It is as engrossing as anything I can recall. It's 12 hourish-long podcasts that delve into a 1999 murder of a Baltimore high school girl. A reporter attempts to determine if the person convicted of the murders actually did it. Although 15 years have pass...

Re: Nappy!! Dog querstion.
I had a Blue Heeler growing up, but it was an outside dog and it had the run of a hobby farm and the chance to work cows. Still, he chewed down a crabapple tree in the backyard out of boredom. Very loyal and protective. Would bark at cows 500 yards off the highway from the back of the pickup. I didn...

Re: Advances in Functional Training-Mike Boyle
I bought it on Kindle. This book, for $9, or $15 or whatever I paid, isn't the cash grab. It's his basic program, updated from the book he wrote in 2003. I don't think it's an unreasonable price, and enough time has passed between the first book and this one that Boyle has probably learned some thin...

Bumping this to see if anyone else has read this and has thoughts on this book. I know Boyle has some contrarian views on back squats and other mainstream lifts, but I also remember he was adamant that the strength coach's first job was not to injure the star athlete It just so happens that I'm look...

I wonder about the authenticity as well. Some things don't ring true. However, I think there's a natural tendency to look at other troops with respect because you aren't privy to the flaws and low morale and other issues. ---------------------------- Speaking of Italians, I was co-located with Itali...

This has some value. Even if you only use it once. http://tihk.co/pages/covert-handcuff-key i have some of these. They work as a regular cuff key, but just barely. I sheared off part of the nub (it's softish plastic), but still managed to get the cuffs open. Those keys are slightly oversized, makin...

No opinion on Lebouf, but this was on the front page of Reddit and I clicked on it. He tells a pretty funny story about how he got blotto and was arrested.

Just an update here, airspeed indicators were down at the time of the crash.
