Re: Tesla
Srs question: where are these complaints being made, and what brand cars are the color mplainers driving? I'm unaware of what you're talking about. I work for the California Commission. I know we're hearing about it. I have heard second-hand that the other western states are hearing about it two. T...

The Musk vision is the roof, hood, paint, etc. will become some type of super solar array to recharge batteries during sunny conditions. Part pipe dream and part possibility. Maybe. For now you need charging stations. And there aren't enough of them. I don't follow. home or work charging stations a...

Building out sufficient charging stations to make electric cars a sensible proposition for all but the most ardent early adopters has been tricky.

Re: Who actually likes turkey?
Capon is a tastier big bird, but it can be hard to find and it tends to be expensive. Eh. I can live with turkey; it's traditional; but I'd rather eat other things.

Drive-By Truckers, "American Band"
For my money, it's their best since Dirty South. The music is fantastic. The lyrics are...well, the band's gotten a lot of stick for writing lyrics that are explicitly political instead of implicitly political, the way they've always done. I dunno. I think it's hard to listen to a song like "Pu...

Re: Spectacularly awful sports parents
I grew up in a neighborhood in Brooklyn called Park Slope. Even in the 80s, when I was growing up, it was a haven for yuppies. Not the truly rich, but architects and oncologists and the like. Growing up in that neighborhood, I played soccer, because of course I did. Soccer season was a lesson in How...

1) Your table doesn't show how many TUEs American athletes were granted, just how many they asked for.
2) Your table doesn't show how many TUEs athletes from other parts of the world either asked for TUEs or got them. Unless the UFC is a new part of the world of which I'm not aware.

RIP Jose Fernandez
Marlins pitched killed in boat accident. Incredible talent; one of the best young pitchers I've seen in a long time. And while I'm not a Marlins fan, I always liked Fernandez because he always seemed to be having fun; seemed to actually like playing baseball, as opposed to the sour-faced unwritten-...

Between 1999 to 2009, human rights organizations estimate that at least 2000 Falun Gong practitioners died in Chinese custody. That's probably a lowball estimate.

Re: Entire Russian team--387 athletes--banned from Rio Olympics for state sponsored doping
Bill, if you can show that American athletes were given TUEs out of proportion to the rest of the world, or that Russian athletes received proportionally fewer, and that the difference is significant, I'll change my mind. Until then, this is sour grapes. It must suck to have your whole country get p...

Not saying Biles is clean, because who the fuck knows, but she had a TUE for the ritalin, and there wasn't anything else in her WADA files.

Most people won't go on to a career in whatever their degrees were in, unless they're in a STEM field. I'm not a professional historian. So, meh, you want to major in athletics rather than cultural anthropology? Follow your bliss.

Re: Hobbies and such
Between work and the kid my time is pretty limited, alas. I haven't managed to keep up with a lot of my old hobbies. I have been enjoying the formal study of rhetoric: Aristotle, Cicero, Puttenham, et al. I don't know if this is entirely a hobby, since it's partly for my work, but it's been fun. Up ...

Re: Just screwed myself out of $500, but I'm happy
Oh, I get it. And I agree. If you have a written contract, wave it in their face and yell. What I'm saying is, it doesn't surprise me that the Chronicle does stupid things. By the way, it may not be worth it to you, but $500 is way under the limit for small claims (i.e., no lawyers allowed) in CA. n...

Re: Just screwed myself out of $500, but I'm happy
That's shitty but, based on the quality of most of their output, it doesn't surprise me that the Chronicle has lousy business practices. They have some excellent beat reporters, and can occasionally get it up for a big feature, but a lot of their writing aspires to the quotidian.

Those who would take away our civil liberties are always ready to trot out compliance as an absolute virtue. Don't like warrantless wiretaps, or watchlists, or a militarized police? Just keep your nose clean, citizen, and you won't have any problems. But this ignores the fact that in this country we...

Dead leaves were dancing out back of Toots O'Rourk's place, whipped to a frenzy by the cold November wind. I turned up the collar of my coat, but the whisky in my gut was twirling a dance of its own, doing its part to keep me warm. I had a date with that lousy scrivener, Seahill. Get a load of this ...
