Re: Gregg Allman, dead at 69
Shit, shit, and shit. I liked him and liked his music. RIP. He said: there are as many ways to songs as there are songs. And I would like to be remembered as somebody who could rock your soul or make you cry with a song He was such a part of my life it's hard to overstate. As a Southerner, his musi...

Re: Do you think you have a soul?
I get agnosticism. Saying you honestly don't know is a legitimate answer. Atheism and its certainty can be every bit as fundamentalist and intellectually dishonest as any other religious tradition. You don't know if you have a soul or not. You can believe it. You can disbelieve it. But you don't kno...

There's a reason he's paid to write down his thoughts. When's the last time someone paid you for yours? . This morning....literally 20 seconds ago...and for the balance of the day...and tomorrow...and sadly for the foreseeable future. Poetic blathering is wonderful....for the blatherer...for most o...

Re: Do you think you have a soul?
Yeah, I do. I think we all have something near to whatever your definition of a soul is. And this is about as mystical as you'll ever hear me get. Because I tell stories for a living, I've spent a lot of time thinking about the concept of story. On those occasions where I'm paid to teach writing, I...

Loved them as a kid, and went to several games with my dad. I've been a casual fan most of my adult life. It would be great for my home state and the city where I worked much of my adult life if they won. So yeah, I'll be cheering.

Re: Who actually likes turkey?
Turkey? Deep fried or smoked or no thanks. Deep fried turkey is a thing of beauty. Crazy delicious, if you get to Thanksgiving dinner late there won't be any left. It's happened to me. Many BBQ restaurants take advance orders for thanksgiving and Xmas parties. Highly recommended, especially the Caj...

Re: Presidential Election 2016 (was "Debates")
For whatever it's worth. I've met HRC twice. Know several people who've known her for many years, and a few who've worked for her for (varying amounts of) years. The folks who truly know her love her. As in they'd walk through fire for her. She's wicked smart. She asks how your mom is doing when she...

Re: Hobbies and such
I play Chess with my 7 y/o son, early, every morning, 7 days a week. The value of this hobby cannot be overstated. I was a musician from 5th grade through college, and sang in choirs for most of that time, too. I have an art degree and taught that for a while. Now, I drive the van for my kids' summ...

Re: Might be car shopping. Thoughts?
Honda CR-V. Loved mine. Had to sell it when we had kid #3 and became a minivan family. Very reliable, lots of usable space for its size, easy to park because it's not that big. Reeks of Honda quality, even if you get the base model. Only downside is the mpg could be better. Otherwise it's perfect fo...

Re: Q for the Republicans
I've voted Republican in every presidential election since I could vote. I am voting for Hilary this time. Trump is a con artist, pure and simple. He also a divisive racist, which is likely his secret appeal, I.e. He is not politically correct. Hilary actually works hard and does a good job in offi...

Re: Juries in the USA
I have tried over 150 jury trials to verdict. I would not change a thing. The system isn't perfect...but I do not know of a better one. All it takes is one bad judge to foul up a verdict. I have tried 33 cases. I do civil defense work. And that's considered a lot of trials in 20 years among my coll...

Re: Help me out here: Sovereign Citizens, what's their reasoning?
The 14th Amendment seems to be the starting point. The Uniform Commercial Code comes into it somehow and can lead a Sovereign to say to a cop giving her a ticket, "I don't have a contract with you." I did my google-fu but it was weak and I couldn't find a comprehensible explanation of thi...

Re: Right now I'm reading
I read to my son frequently. We're reading the second book in The Eighth Day series right now. Kind of Percy Jackson-ish. Not bad! Personally, I'm reading "The Power of the Dog", same author as "The Cartel" (which I read first, but is a sequel to this one) - pretty entertaining....

Re: Right now I'm reading
Yes, I read to my kids at least 5 nights per week....or they read to me. Good for you David, but I am unsurprised, coming from you. Watching them figure stories out, answering questions, letting them learn new words, beats the ever living shit out of "The Voice" or whatever. Thanks, not s...
