Good read. That dude was a total bad ass.
For all its bravura, Mr. Fairfax’s seafaring almost pales beside his earlier ventures. Footloose and handsome, he was a flesh-and-blood character out of Graham Greene, with more than a dash of Hemingway and Ian Fleming shaken in.
At 9, he settled a dispute with a pistol. At 13, he lit out for the Amazon jungle.
At 20, he attempted suicide-by-jaguar. Afterward he was apprenticed to a pirate.
He deserves a mention here:

Cool bio.
The article references
these immigrant Norwegians in America. Their story is fascinating as well.

I remember this guy. It was a big deal back when I was in Vietnam - lots of press. I've caught bits and pieces about him since - the guy was quite a story. Suicide by jaguar - a good one to convince terrorists to try perhaps??? :)

Suicide by Jaguar meaning crashing one at high speed. He is the guy you see in the "world's most interesting man" ads on TV. At least he was.
