Can we discuss this sniper shit again for a moment...

Maybe we've been through this before and I forgot. I don't expect this to go over with the crowd but I'm interested in the IGx opinion. That SEAL sniper dude with the book that just came out with 150 "confirmed" kills was on the front page of the Star-Telegram today. Frankly I couldn't get all the way through the article but I have some deep-seated personal issues with these guys which may have something to do with that. But it's the sniping thing that is my real issue. I can't wrap my head around telling every fucking person that has ears to listen and eyes to see that I've shot and killed 150 people. I don't care who they were or what the situation may be. And if there were 150 "confirmed" it's reasonable to assume there's plenty of more wounded or dead unconfirmed. What's the motivation behind this? Certainly there are people in this world that need killing but the glorification of the act itself seems somewhat outlandish to me. And the same goes for the "longest kill" stuff. Those acts to me would seem to be intensely private and personal and not for open discussion. Let's not discount the fact that I'm on my period right now and I'm very emotional.

I agree. I never finished the book either. I read Marcus Luttrells book because I had met him and it was an amazing situation, but I have given up on these types of books.

And what Pinky said.

The dude is a good shot. He may or may not be an asshole. Assholeness is not a discriminator on the americans who do that business for the est of us.

Been there done that on douchebaggery during National Anthem.

Shape you are too sane for this crazy world. Our armed forces are necessary, but fetishizing shooting people is fucking nuts. Sure most of them had it coming, but the BATF guys killing kids in Waco said the same shit.

We celebrate fighter aces, most of whose kills were sneak attacks on stuff like transport aircraft and bombers. Our WWII sub skippers sinking Jap transports. Bomber pilots dropping their wad on major cities. Hellfire strikes from drones is pretty much like sniping. Nasty business.

Good for him for not feeling all conflicted about it. I'd not feel the same. Certainly wouldn't write a book.

I guess that's why he made a good sniper, and you wouldn't.

Confirmed by whom? If it was one of his buddies, you gotta take the claim with a grain of salt.

My grandfather killed hundreds of Japanese and never once bragged about it. I honor the people who dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but I don't celebrate it.

Each man is different, some enjoy being hunters, others just do the job as effectively but are quiet about it .

I could care less how they choose to live their lives after serving but I'll say the only ones I truly thought deserved automatic respect were the guys I've met (grandfather, uncle couple HS buddies) who'd say straight out, it was hard, I got through it and I'm not real interested in impressing anybody with war stories.

Maybe, but make no mistake, that's not hunting.

I don't get the problem. The guy did his shit better than anyone else. He's operating at a level of skill and danger that most of us cannot fathom. If he's bragging in a way that's offensive, then maybe Shape has a point. Haven't read the book. But I might.

Is it specifically the fact that he's a sniper that's the issue here?

I think that is the definition of hunting, actually. Have you never seen this?

Read the book and dug it greatly. And I take him at his word that he wrote it to honor and recognoze his two buddies who were killed. And all proceeds of the book are going to charities and those two families.

I think it s afact that he's a SEAL and that among the quiet professionals of the Armed Services, SEALS are more prone to this kind of douchebaggery..when Jose Canseco does it you call it as you see it....douchebaggery. No different here.

I have been casually reading through Seal Team Six and have found it fascinating.

Books don't sell themselves.

If what was posted is true, and he's giving every single dime to the families of fallen comrades, then it might explain why he's out vigorously hawking his book.

I for one don't give two shits if he is effected by killing 150 muslim vermin. A much harder American generation would have given him the MOH.
