Statins - Just Gimme Some Truth!

I'm well overdue for a physical so I don't know my cholesterol numbers right now, but they're never good and I've yet to get on a statin, cuz... I don't really like/trust drugs.

Plus, I know the debate about the relationship between fats/cholesterol/heart disease is constantly being challenged and rewritten... so I punt and do little but try to eat reasonably well and exercise lazily but moderately (2-4x/week).

Anyway, I know my numbers wont be good and a script will be written.

Should I take the shit?

They're generally pretty well tolerated. The questions are: what other co-factors do you have? (HTN, DM, etc) How high are your numbers? If the TC is 220, and you have no other factors, then no need. But if you're at 400 and you're also diabetic, well, then, get popping.

Statins work great in terms of lowering cholesterol. However, it does not translate to decreased incidence of cardiac events (e. g. Heart attacks) or cardiac mortality, in individuals not diagnosed with cardiac disease, even in high risk groups who have DM and HTN. The upside - side effects are infrequent, you will feel that you are doing something good for your health and will contribute to the happines of people in pharma industry.

Secondary prevention is another thing altigether: here statins show benefits.

My cholesterol at some time went to 10.4. Instead of taking statins I sorted out my thyroid function, and now it is around 6.0 (yiu have to convert it to Americam units). I

Not sure I get the full implication of what you're saying here, could you elaborate?
