Damn good war history about the Algerian War. Lotta parallels to Iraq and Afghanistan that are hard not to draw, but the tragic portrayal of the French paras blew me away. Great book.

Yeap, I second this recommendation.

Both of Jean Paul Larteguy's novels on Algeria, "The Centurions" and "The Preatorians" dwell on the struggles of the Army (especially the Paras and Foreign Legion) in a novelized version.

A really cool movie is the "Battle for Algiers", done in black and white, French with subtitles. The film was done in Algeria with the cooperation of the FLN and features some of the vets of the FLN.

One line from the film which sticks with me was "Matthieu's" remarks on ID. "Checking ID is an exercise is futility. If anyone will have accurate and complete ID it is a terrorist". Something to think about as we're being pushed into "Real ID" here in the US.
