Recon Tanto

I just got a Cold Steel catalog in the mail yesterday. I thought back to 03 when I was in Iraq. I bought a Recon Tanto just before deploying. I saw the reviews and figured it would do a great job. Truth is, it sucked BIG time. I couldn't cut through much of anything. I had to rely on someone else who had a KaBar in order to cut things. It is certainly a waste of money, don't buy it.

It's all about the shape of the edge IMO. Best steel in the world, best heat treatment, shitty edge geometry = can't cut anything.

Cold Steel is crap, for the same price range there are much better blades to be had.

You shouldn't buy things you don't know enough about to make an intelligent decision and then bitch about the result. For the last thousand years or so, knives have come with various blade shapes, each appropriate to a specific purpose or a compromise for multiple purposes. This one is for stabbing, not cutting. That's why it doesn't cut well.

I wasn't going to say anything, but G is right. Tanto is for jamming through armor--yoroidoshi--more or less. They sharpened the edges because it was there and increased versatility, but yeah. Stab someone and you may like it more.

The tantō was designed primarily as a stabbing weapon...

This is why a leaf blade is one of the best all round desins for a knife.
Roman Gladius and Pugio, Greek Zyphos, yadda Yadda.

Mini Smashette is what Trooper carried at work, he had a real sweet leaf Blade made before his death.

Tanto is a can opener. SRK is a better outdoor knife for a Cold Steel, I love mine and my LTC Kukri.

I've chopped down trees with my SRK. Best knife I ever bought. Cold Steel is a good company but they expanded their products a bit too much. Not everything is off high quality now unlike when they were just starting out.
