I'm half way through this, but highly recommended, I did Judo for a couple of years over 20 years ago
but even for those with no background in the sport/art it's a great book.

The guy is a journalist who took up Judo at 50 after no having any sporting background
covers origins, some biographical stuff on Kano, Kimura, Yamashita, Gracie "judo", judo influence on Sambo so far
Riviting reading, I found a copy at local borders so should be easy to obtain

Angry White Pyjamas: A Scrawny Oxford Poet Takes Lessons From The Tokyo Riot Police

By Robert Twigger

The setting is Japan in the early 1990s and the author decided to take the same Aikido course that some of the Tokyo Riot Police take. All Tokyo Riot police members have to have a BB in one of the traditional Japanese MA; Judo, Aikido, or Kendo. And it has to be a BB in a course specifically designed for the Tokyo Riot Police.

Twigger basically created the recent phenomenon of travel MA books.
