Relentless Forward Progress: A Guide to Running Ultramarathons by Byron Powell

I've known Byron for a few years through the UltraRunning distribution lists and gleaned advice from him off and on. I had at one time wanted to see if he would coach me, but I just couldn't bring myself to pay for the rates he was charging. Then I found out this book came out recently and I immediately purchased it for under $10.

I have to say that it is a good read for anyone who wants something well-rounded as an ultramarathon runners training reference. Covers everything you can basically think of when it comes to doing ultras, from training (has training plans from 50k to 100 miles in there. I was very happy that it had 100 mile plans) to nutrition, race day gear and post-race recovery. I have to admit that I was hoping that there would have been more for the training, but he did provide good guidelines based on his own experiences (Byron unlike Mayor McCheeze has actually WON shit or placed in the top 10 at most races and he is STILL RACING so he practices what he preaches).

For anyone who is either training to do their first ultra or if they're a trainer and have someone who needs guidance, this is a cheap book that is good to have on the shelf.

I'm using it right now to help me with my 100 mile race for 2012. I purposely gave myself a lot of time so I would do this right.

What kind of rates did he quote?
