Good travel writer.
Confederates in the Attic was primarily about Civil War reenactors. Probably his most popular book. Interesting book about different perspectives on the Civil War and the modern South.
Baghdad Without a Map, about his travels around the Middle East before Desert Storm. Great perspective on the cultures of several countries. One of the best books about the Middle East I've read.
From what I've read, his books are like collections of longish magazine articles around a central theme. He's at his best when writing about ordinary people rather than 'important' ones, and writes sensitively about people rather than producing caricatures of them. Both are funny and serious at the same time. Confederates was a little uneven near the end, but still enjoyable-- the stuff about reenactors and in North Carolina and Virginia was the best. Baghdad w/o a Map was solid throughout.
